Located 60 kms west of Cairns in Mareeba on the Atherton Tablelands – famous for its 300 plus days of clear skies and sunshine and free of coastal humidity and high temperatures – it is the perfect location for students to start the incredible journey that becoming a qualified helicopter pilot represents.
The primary helicopter type utilised for training is the Robinson R22 Beta 2 and being part of the larger GBR Helicopters family, students have access to larger helicopter types as their training program develops including the Robinson R44, Bell B206 Jet Ranger, Long Ranger and Eurocopter AS350.
Our three principle (Grade 1) Flight Instructors, boast a collective 20,000 hrs of helicopter flight experience in commercial charter, tourism, military and flight training operations and are available to deliver a broad range of instructional programs to suit your needs.
The primary training base in Mareeba offers the perfect environment for “ab-initio” (initial) flight training, as it allows students to develop their early aircraft handling skills without the pressure and stress of high traffic, controlled airspace that inevitably causes student aircraft to be held on the ground in deference to commercial traffic, which means that valuable and expensive flying time is lost to those delays.
With additional operating bases and fuel depots in Cairns and Port Douglas, our instructors have the opportunity to expose students to both controlled and uncontrolled airspace environments as their individual capabilities allow and the diverse geography of those environments offer exciting and challenging scenarios in which to hone their skills.
As a division of the largest helicopter operation in the Far North (in terms of fleet size/staff and turnover) our students will be exposed to a large, busy tourism and commercial charter helicopter operation with more than 20 professional pilots operating a fleet of 16 aircraft. This environment provides incredibly valuable opportunities to get involved, network and be mentored in a “real-world” environment.
Embarking on a career as a professional helicopter pilot is an extremely challenging and rewarding endeavour and the process begins with careful selection of a professional training organisation that will lead you through the process from your initial enquiry to the day you pass your flight test to get your helicopter licence and then help to connect you into the highly competitive job market .
We warmly invite you to get in touch and start the process of discovery, no question is too trivial.
